Latter-day Saints were stunned in 1911 to learn that the interior of the Salt Lake temple had been photographed and that a $100,000 ransom was demanded for the photos. Former University of Utah president James E. Talmage proposed that the First Presidency commission their own photos to undermine the value of the blackmailers' product. They agreed, asking Talmage to oversee the project, which resulted in his landmark House of the Lord, and then called the forty-nine-year-old educator to the apostleship. Talmage had previously been of service to the First Presidency. As a geology professor his advice was sought regarding underground ventilation for the Tabernacle and about the scientific evidence for organic evolution, which Talmage confirmed to them was conclusive. At the church president's request, he also delivered a series of lectures on theology. Through all of this, Talmage learned how to deal with controversy. This would prove important as his books, The Articles of Faith and Jesus the Christ, were denounced by senior apostles and when church leaders excised portions of one of his general conference addresses from the published proceedings. The Essential James E. Talmage includes the apostle's lesser-known works and material omitted from later editions of his books. In addition, relevant diary entries shed light on the process of by which these signal works were produced.
